Just life....

What’s keeping me entertained these days

Happy August! It’s my birthday month, which usually offsets that it’s our hottest month of the year, and always when I had to go back to school after summer vacation as a child… I thought you might need a break from me wittering on about my Scandi trip (and you’ll hear a LOT more about that). I really enjoy other people’s “What I’ve been reading, watching, etc., ” posts, so here’s one from me.

Yes, I saw Barbie in the theater and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve only been to a handful of movies in the theater since COVID, and our local vintage 1920’s movie palace went all out with mannequins in the lobby in Barbie & Ken fashions through the years, as well as a pink Barbie cocktail (this theater has a full bar – go https://www.kentuckytheatre.org/ !) I even wore pink. Lots of pink-clad movie-goers, including several men, bless ’em. Next on my list is Oppenheimer, which I’m hoping we make it to this weekend.

On TV, we’re captivated by The Diplomat, a cross between Jack Ryan and The West Wing.

Still working on all those trees that came down during the last big storm…

Probably my favorite book of the year so far is Someone Else’s Shoes, a delicious Jojo Moyes caper about 2 women who couldn’t be more different, but mistakenly exchange gym bags. Great character development and plot twists!

Amatuer florist on the rampage…

I love a podcast called As The Season Turns. It comes out the first day of each month, and is a half-hour long. While focused on the UK, it talks about what happens each month in the natural world, from what food is in season to what’s happening in a pond to the phases of the moon. It makes me much more conscious of the natural world around me and the cycles of the year.

These are called Magic lillies, because their spring foliage dies back and disappears, then these blossoms shoot up from the bare ground in August. My mother (who was very proper) called them Naked Ladies, after which she’d always giggle guiltily…

My favorite Instagram accounts these days are @mymulberryhouse, an idyllic English country cottage life, and @cedricgrolet, a French pastry chef whose creations are almost as good to watch as they would be to eat.

Moonrise at the cottage

Cheers, y’all – I hope everyone’s August is safe, healthy and joyful!

Hi MK, I love your cottage and can imagine how idyllic it must be to live in. Thanks for the book recommendation. I love Jo Jo Moyes and look forward to reading this one. Your floral arrangements are beautiful. Did you grow all of those flowers? I like the bold style choice of a scarf, but have never been able to pull it off – it looks great on you. Well, gotta run now, but I really enjoyed passing the time with your beautiful visuals. Have a wonderful August.

That’s so kind, Suzanne! I do grow those flowers – definately a “hobby gotten out of hand”! Thanks for your comments – it’s my favorite part of blogging…

Loved the latest blog. Especially the recommendations. Thanks. We tend to enjoy the same types of books, TV, music and foodie things so it is so welcomed.
You look marvelous and I hope this August is the best Birthday Month ever.

Thanks, friend! Let me know what you think if you try any out. We just watched the season conclusion of The Diplomat and are still open-mouthed!!!!

Hi MK, I’m running a little behind on your Adventures, but I wanted to say how very much I like your linen dress in this post, with the cheetah print scarf. I have been looking for just such a one (dress, not scarf). Please tell me where you got it? Keep up the great entertainment!

Thanks so much, Lea! I got that particular linen dress in Positano, from a boutique that sold locally-made clothes. And I shall cry when it finally wears out. But in the meantime, I got a skirt from Grae Cove, which was really reasonably priced and decent quality for the price. I’ve also been looking at linen from Quince (which also has value-priced cashmere!) but haven’t pulled the trigger on anything from them yet…let me know if you do and what you think!

So happy to read this post. Have added My Mulberry House to those I follow on IG. Just wow. The first image I saw when I went to ‘follow’ her was an open door to the house allowing the chickens to meander in. Such prettiness.

We loved “Barbie.” Rented the theater – not one nearly as grand as yours, though – and the whole family went. Renting the theater allowed the 1 and 3 year olds to ‘sing’ as much as they wanted without disturbing others.

Is that your cottage caught in the early moonlight? Beautiful!! I love the rock walls of Kentucky. Could stop to photograph every single one. We had been visiting my mom in KY for years before we stopped a few minutes to explore Waveland, which I was sure was a water park until I learned better. So much beauty in one state.

I’d love to have a whole theater for my group – what a great idea! Waveland is about halfway between where I live and work, and I was raised in a house of about the same age. If only Kentucky had a seacoast, it would be perfect!
