The perfect sweater dress

I’d better get this posted about sweater dresses before we’re all too into spring! But, there’s still plenty of chilly weather to go, so……

I’ve had 3 memorable sweater dresses over the years. The first was a navy blue cashmere/lambswool I got from Benetton when I lived in Germany. It had a deep V neckline, and rather than wear it over a camisole or tank, I wore it with the V in the back and nothing underneath it, and high heels. I felt incredibly sexy in it, both warm and cuddly and showing lots of skin. Even if photos of it existed, they wouldn’t do it justice…If I still had it today, I’d wear it over tights, leggings or jeans.

Imagine this in navy blue, without the shaker stitch and with V about 2 inches deeper. And a 25-yr-old me in it, with very short hair.

I hope there’s a part of heaven like the Rainbow Bridge, where all you favorite clothes over you life are waiting for you – unshrunken, no moth-holes, and they all fit beautifully! They’ll wrap their silken sleeves around your neck as you whisper how much you’ve missed them….gawd, I’ve got to get out of the house a bit more! I do see a future blog post here though….

The 2nd dress was a solid black shaker stitch with a cowl neck. It was very cheap, ordered from the Avon clothing catalog (anybody remember that?) I wore it with a wide patent-leather belt and tall boots when I lived in snowy upstate NY, and I wore it to pieces.

You can’t tell a thing about the dress in this! But this is my awesome mother and me in about 1991. I have her gold necklace, and I may still have those black pumps…

The third dress I bought last year at Talbot’s (long sold-out, I’m afraid). I love everything about it, from my signature color of blue, to the two tone and marled sleeves, the silver buttons across the shoulders and the perfect length for shortie-me.

I’ve styled it here with 3 different ways. It’s body-skimming, but I think it just looks better with a belt.

These are navy pumps, and the belt is actually leopard print on the other side – I just flipped it to the plain silver side. I’m wearing larger silver earrings, and letting those buttons on the shoulders be the rest of the jewelry.

Here the shoes are switched out for ankle boots, and this belt is made of bottlecaps and a seatbelt buckle! Never a dull moment around here, I tell ya…long silver necklace.

The scene here is almost stolen by the wrap/pashmina/stole, which I snapped up at the church bazaar a few years ago. Out come the over the knee boots and blue fedora, because by now my hair’s messed up, right?

The dress actually got to go off the farm last weekend on a DATE! We actually went out to a restaurant, almost like The Before Time. Don’t worry, all appropriate masking and social distancing was followed…but it was HEAVENLY!!

The Cutest Boy in the World is sitting right across from me, so no wonder I’m smiling!

OK, y’all’s turn: Tell me about a favorite winter dress you’ve known and loved, while we’re all waiting for spring to arrive!

Your turn will come, Nancy, and I know you’ll have EXACTLY the outfit for it! I didn’t think of my mother as elegant at the time, but she surely was. She would make a good future blog post – thank you!

LOVE the picture with your mom! I wish I had the opportunity to spend more time with her. I always thought you took after your father, but seeing you together in this picture – I can see many of her features in you! My favorite picture is the last – I think that necklace compliments the buttons on the shoulders, and I favor the “no belt” look. My favorite winter dress of all time was (I thought) a GORGEOUS bright purple number with a jewel collar, fitted waist, long sleeves with a little puff at the shoulder (VERY 80’s) and a wide skirt. It was a heavy knit material, and I loved wearing it with a red and purple paisley scarf at the neck and red shoes. No pictures. Sigh.

I wish we’d ALL gotten to spend more time with my mom – she left us far too soon. But she liked you a lot…I think that silver necklace is my favorite with the dress, too. I’m imagining your purple dress and it sounds beautiful! Hoping it’s waiting for you in Clothes Heaven too…

Look at you turning the belt around to make it look different. I call that thinking outside the box….BRAVO!!
And you crack me up…”gawd, I’ve got to get out of the house a bit more!”. That’s exactly what I said the other day when I was singing at the top of my voice and heckling the singer!! Social…we need some social in our lives!!!

But back to the topic at hand. I just adore sweater dresses. And I’ve had SO many. I still have one of my ivory ones. The reason I don’t have both?? I thought it’d be too warm in AZ for a long sleeved one. Ha…and we know the answer to that.

Okay, so you know me…I’m going to push you to wear a bright pink or yellow necklace with it next time?? Do you dare???

At the time I turned that belt around, I thought to myself “Jodie would approve of this” – bwahaha! Don’t hold your breath on the pink or yellow necklace, at least until I’ve worn all my silver ones, pearls, etc. – that will take several winters – NON-Covid winters at that!

I love sweater dresses! They are my favorite dresses of all time next to sweatshirt dresses! Not only are they practical but they are also effortless. I love the button details on your dress and how you styled it. Your belt is such a fun piece too! You look fantastic.
