Tell Me About… Vacations, aka Holidays
This month’s bloggers’ group topic was picked by ME, as it’s the season for them, at least in the northern hemisphere (I’m now much more aware of the opposite rhythms of our friends Down Under). I do find the different schedules interesting, as American school holidays will come to an end in August, while many UK “hols” are just starting. A young friend visiting recently from France was amazed to discover not every country completely shuts down for the month of August like France does! The USA is the stingiest country in the world when it comes to paid time off for their workers. Two weeks is the standard for…

Stockholm, travel fashion girls and Rick Steves
I hope you don’t mind a few more tales of our Scandi trip from this summer. I’d like to share the last bits with you before I head off to eastern Europe next month.. We spent a lovely day in Stockholm, buying a bus/tram pass for the first time on this trip. First stop was the Gamla Stan, or Old Town. Not many tourists around, mostly locals on their morning commutes. We had a wander to ourselves, then found ourselves by the residence of the royal family. We enjoyed an afternoon pizza snack, and explored an incredible food hall. The legendary “kanelbullar”, Swedish cinnamon buns, were every bit as good…

Riga, packing cubes, and is it an airport or a shopping mall?
I never dreamed I’d visit any of the Baltic countries, but the capital of Latvia was the next stop on our cruise. Riga was full of old-world charm, and we made a short walk from where our ship docked into the Old Town. Our first stop was at the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, which documents the 55 years of the 20th c. when Latvia was occupied twice by the Soviet Union, and by the Nazis in between. Much like the House of Terror in Budapest that I visited in 2021, this recently-renovated and now state-of-the-art museum makes sure no visitor will have any doubts as to the brutality…

Tell me about….TRAVEL!
My blogger writing group prompt this month is Travel, which is a) one of my favorite things b) one of the main subjects of this blog and c) particularly timely, as I just got back from a 2-week trip to Europe. I have several blog posts on that trip already planned, but I’ll include a few tidbits from that trip in this post. I’ve been a travel addict from a young age. My family and I took a trip to the beach every other year. It took us 2 years to save up for that week. Growing up in a land-locked state (Kentucky), the ocean was utterly magical, and I…

Is it too late to look back at 2022?
Serious bloggers probably put their “year-end” posts together early in December, but I haven’t posted in the last, um…many months, so we know I don’t fall into that category. Anyway, I’ve been inspired by those who have, so here’s my stab at it. The important stuff Big stuff that happened this year included the youngest and oldest members of the family being healthy and happy. My great-nephew David is the first baby on the farm in 30 years, and is a source of joy to all. My awesome mother-in-law Goodie turned 90, still lives alone in her own house, drives with confidence, and volunteers weekly with Altzheimer’s patients. The massive…
